KALAWEIT INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION PROGRAM

Help a young gibbon to return to the rainforest

What is KIAP all about ?

The "Kalaweit International Adoption Program" ( Kiap) gives you the opportunity to contribute to the preservation and the protection of gibbons from Indonesia. The Kalaweit Program , featuring the Kiap Program, rescues gibbons who are victims of hunting, of the black market in illegal pets, of fire, and who need help. These gibbons deserve the chance to return to the rainforest some day ... The KALAWEIT mission: to give them this chance ! KIAP is a unique program, that allows you to adopt a gibbon and help it throughout the rehabilitation process. It is a way to better understand the multitude of efforts made by the KALAWEIT team as you follow in real time the progress, the difficulties and the chances for a future of a young orphan.

Why is KIAP important ?

The "KALAWEIT Foundation" is a non-profit organisation, and its status in Indonesia does not allow them to get involved in fundraising. This organisation does not receive any financial aid from either the Indonesian, French or UK governments. Therefore, we are always searching for sponsors to finance the feeding and the care of the animals. All the donations (100%) generated by our friends from the " KALAWEIT Family" via the KIAP go to helping the gibbons. Without these sponsoring/adoption activities, our humble initiative will have to end. We do not pretend that we can save all the gibbons from extinction, there are too many factors involved but we CAN make a difference. KALAWEIT is a project whose goals are to work where others have stop thinking, helping these animals is our duty!

What happens when you adopt an orphaned gibbon?

Everyone who adopts a gibbon becomes a part of the "KALAWEIT FAMILY". You can send e-mail messages to our project management at any time to ask questions, send comments and suggestions, etc. If you have paid for the full year for your gibbon you will receive a monthly update about your orphan and a picture as well as special messages to inform you about the adopted gibbon. You can also receive the " KALAWEIT Newsletter" if you wish. All information is sent by email to reduce paper use and postage costs so that all your adoption money goes straight to the gibbons.

KIAP ... how does it work ?

The KALAWEIT program needs £170 (€250) per year to be able to finance the veterinarian care and the food for one gibbon. There are two ways to support the team and to adopt an orphaned gibbon:

1) Single adoption: only one "guardian" donates the yearly fee and he/she is the only one to receive news from this particular gibbon. The "guardian's" name is posted in our information office in Palangka Raya, and on our website. He/she is introduced as an active member of the KALAWEIT big family and as the official guardian of the gibbon he/she sponsors. This person is informed not only about the adopted gibbon but he also about the welfare care (medical exams, couple formation, etc ...) The guardian also receives monthly information about the gibbon.

2) Group adoption: Several "guardians" donate the necessary funds to sponsor a gibbon. The number of "guardians" and any outstanding funds needed for that gibbon are posted on our website. Each "guardian" is free to donate any amount of money to help a gibbon (€10 minimum). All group guardians are informed of events concerning the ape they have adopted.
