Hampapak wildlife sanctuary
Reasons of the creation of this sanctuary :
--Very high biodiversity in this area without any protection.
-Very endangered species in that area (as orangutan and gibbon)
-Perfect gibbon release site
-Also perfect release site for others animals rescued by Kalaweit as snake, slow loris, etc…
-Excellent relationships between the villagers from Hampapak and Kalaweit
-Easy to set up by Kalaweit, because the Hampapak island (where the entire rehab project is located) is in the middle of the area. |

The Hampapak sanctuary will
permit him to return in forest… |
-Less human activities in that region
-Fire is every year a issue in that area.
Forest :
The forest in the Hampapak wildlife sanctuary is a very good quality secondary forest, but fragmented (by fire in 1997), and flooded every year. This is the perfect habitat for all swamp species of Borneo , as orangutan, proboscis monkey, etc…
Animal:
This is a idea of the animals you can found in the reserve: gibbon, orangutan, proboscis monkey, leaf monkey, macaques, slow loris, pangolin, clouded leopard, tarsier, wild cat, python, king cobra, muntjac, etc…

Status of the forest:
Unprotected forest before, but the villagers was fight to keep the lack clean from pollution and illegal activities (as fishing with explosive and poison) .
Potential gibbon release site:
Very low gibbon ( Hylobates albirbaris ) population inside (genetically unviable), because of forest fragmentation. If we protect it now, the forest will be able to receive many more gibbon pairs in few years. This site gives us the opportunity to release the gibbons following the IUCN guidelines on primate rehabilitation/reintroduction.
First pair released in : year 2007
Strategy used to protect this forest:
-Negotiation of a memorandum of understanding with all villagers
-The chief of the village sign it.
-Negotiation with that MoU with the authorities (as the chief of the district, head of Palangka Raya, and governor of Central Kalimantan )
-Presentation of the project to the authorities of Jakarta .

Borders of the sanctuary are: (East to West: less than 4km), (North to south: less than 6 km). (2.400 hectares) . We are working to build an extension of this reserve, following the Rungan river. At this moment, january 2009, the managed part is 1.000 ha. |
